Reconstructing Jurassic?Cretaceous Intra?Oceanic Subduction Evolution in the Northwestern Panthalassa Ocean Using Ocean Plate Stratigraphy From Hokkaido, Japan

چکیده

Plate reconstructions of the Panthalassa Ocean typically portray a simple system diverging plates surrounded by active margins, yet geological and seismic tomographic records demonstrate that intra-oceanic subduction existed. Here, we reconstruct plate tectonic evolution pre-Cretaceous Oku-Niikappu island arc, remnants which are exposed on Hokkaido, Japan. This arc formed at Jurassic zone separating two oceanic plates: Izanagi here proposed ‘Izanami’ Plate. The was previously shown to have gone extinct in an setting, subsequently (hyper)extended, overlain Berriasian cherts. remained ocean floor for ?45 Myr until its ?100 Ma accretion revealing original position far from continental margin likely above identified Telkhinia slabs. We show extinction coincided with northwestern reorganization recorded ?30° change spreading direction, subsequent extension is straightforwardly explained Izanami-Pacific ridge followed continued divergence between Pacific plates. From our reconstruction, it follows outer Japan, accretionary complex Complex resides belongs, separated inner back-arc basin during Early mid-Cretaceous. study illustrates value orogens development lost ancient particularly when combined marine geophysical data sets.

Structural context and variation of ocean plate stratigraphy, Franciscan Complex, California: insight into mélange origins and subduction-accretion processes

The transfer (accretion) of materials from a subducting oceanic plate to a subduction-accretionary complex has produced rock assemblages recording the history of the subducted oceanic plate from formation to arrival at the trench. These rock assemblages, comprising oceanic igneous rocks progressively overlain by pelagic sedimentary rocks (chert and/or limestone) and trench-fill clastic sediment...

Late Jurassic ocean anoxic event: evidence from voluminous sulphide deposition and preservation in the Panthalassa

The historically productive copper-bearing Besshi-type sulphide deposits in the Japanese accretionary complex were formed as volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits on the deep-sea floor of the Panthalassa Ocean. Here we report that eleven typical Besshi-type deposits yielded Re-Os isochron ages around 150 Ma (148.4 ± 1.4 Ma from the composite isochron) in Late Jurassic time. This date coincides...

Intraoceanic subduction spanned the Pacific in the Late Cretaceous–Paleocene

The notorious ~60° bend separating the Hawaiian and Emperor chains marked a prominent change in the motion of the Pacific plate at ~47 Ma (million years ago), but the origin of that change remains an outstanding controversy that bears on the nature of major plate reorganizations. Lesser known but equally significant is a conundrum posed by the pre-bend (~80 to 47 Ma) motion of the Pacific plate...

Tracking Freshwater Plume Using Ocean Radar in Ariake Bay, Japan

A freshwater discharge from a river is a crucial factor to understand water circulation and ecological system near the river mouth due to the changes of seawater density and the nutrient supply for the ocean. Therefore, water pollution such as red tide is strongly dependent upon the amount of water discharged from river and the pathways of them. It is clear that there is a need to understand th...
